Gods of Theros. Did I get it right?

Asked by pedroedmarcos 5 years ago

Hey there, So, I was looking into some cards and I was wondering if is this how it works.Possibility:

1-Since gods are creatures in other zones than battlefield, regardless your devotion restraint, If I cast Purphoros, I'm casting him as a creature. When it enters the battlefield happens a state-based action that check for the devotion of colors and by that way, He will or will not be considered a creature(Just like tokens on the graveyard), since is a state-based action he still enters the battlefield as a creature, but he can change, as a stated-based action that check for devotion, or not.

2-There is no such thing as stated-based action in this case. Before the god enters the battlefield the devotion is checked and than will be defined if the god will enter as an enchantment or a creature.

Purphoros, God of the Forge has a static ability that modifies his card types and has no relation to state based actions. If you control Essence of the Wild and have a devotion to red of 4 or less, Purphoros, God of the Forge will enter as itself, rather than entering as a copy of Essence of the Wild. If your devotion raises to 5 or more, he will be a creature, but as he's not entering the battlefield again, he will remain himself, only now a creature. Whether or not Purphoros, God of the Forge is a creature at any moment depends only on your current devotion to red.

So you're saying that the checking happens after the stack resolves and before it enters the battlefield to determine if will enter as a creature or not?

For replacement effects. For triggers (such as Soul of the Harvest) it will check after it enters. If you have a Soul of the Harvest and an Essence of the Wild with devotion to red of exactly 4, Purphoros, God of the Forge will enter as itself, being a creature, drawing you a card. If your devotion is lower, you won't draw a card, and if it is higher you will just get another Essence of the Wild (while drawing a card).

5 right? You're using 4 devotion all this time...or there's something with devotion to red 4?

Purphoros, God of the Forge also checks its own mana symbol when calculating devotion. In Neotrup's example, having already fielded a devotion of four is a necessary condition for Purphoros to enter the battlefield as a creature--Purphoros' own symbol will be included in the devotion check, putting your devotion to red past the five threshold (the four already fielded plus the one entering the battlefield).

Having a devotion of 5 means that it will look like a creature to replacement effects, so the Essence of the Wild I'm using in my example will see it as a creature and cause it to enter as a copy of Essence of the Wild rather than entering as it's own godly self.
