Fail to Find

Asked by Colten_Lee 9 years ago

Okay, so I know you can "fail to find" cards from your library, but is there anywhere else that you can do the same?

Graveyard?

Exile?

Well, failure to find only works with hidden zones. You can only "fail to find" if you "search". Do you search your graveyard or the exile zone?

No, because they are public zones.

Is there a specific interaction you have in mind?

Well that answers my question perfectly. Thanks.

No, no specific scenario or anything.

One more thing, with Demonic Tutor or Diabolic Tutor, you can never "f2f", since your cards will always meet the requirement of "a card". If you search your library with Karametra, God of Harvests, you are allowed "f2f", since you are looking for specifically "plains or forest".

Edit:

Quick notes on the "f2f" limits can be found here:

Okay so you can only f2f if you're searching for something specific or with requirements?? Anything that just says a card or cards you can't? Do I have that right? So with Gifts Ungiven I couldn't?

From the link above, emphasis mine:

When instructed to search a non-public zone (hand or library) players can fail to find what they are looking for if the card that is being searched for has a specific characteristic.

As a general rule, if you have to make the card you searched for public knowledge to prove that it indeed matches the characteristics described, only then can you "f2f".

For Gifts, it says up to 4 cards. Gatherer ruling:

12/1/2004: You can choose to find fewer than four cards if you want, but your opponent will still put two of those cards into your graveyard.
