Does strionic reonator copy the effect of Sigil of Sleep againt all opponents if it was enchanted on a Guttersnipe?
Asked by -Orvos- 11 years ago
what if I triggered Guttersnipe 's ability and had Sigil of Sleep on him then used Strionic Resonator to copy sigil of sleeps ability. All against more than one opponent. Would I get to return two creatures per opponent or would it only copy against one opponent?
From the deck Legacy of the Firemind
Some copies are casted (i.e. - a ciphered spell) and would therefore trigger Guttersnipe , whereas the copies your opponents get from Hive Mind are not. The actual use of the word cast is the key as to whether or not it will trigger.
To answer OP's question though, using Strionic Resonator to copy Sigil of Sleep 's triggered ability would allow you to return 2 creatures per opponent. Also, copying Guttersnipe 's ability would allow that to happen as well because they are 2 seperate instances of damage per opponent, causing Sigil of Sleep to trigger for each instance.

Yes, copying the triggered ability from Sigil of Sleep would allow you to bounce two creatures from each opponent if you cast an instant or sorcery to trigger Guttersnipe .
However, if you use the Strionic Resonator to copy the Guttersnipe triggered ability rather than that of Sigil of Sleep when you cast an instant or sorcery, then the Guttersnipe would deal damage to each opponent twice which would trigger Sigil of Sleep twice. This would give you your desired effect and also do twice as much damage.

Neither of the above is correct.
When you cast an instant or sorcery spell, Guttersnipe
triggers. When its ability resolves and deals 2 damage to each opponent, Sigil of Sleep
will trigger for each of those players who have been dealt damage. This will create a number of triggered abilities on the stack equal to the number of player dealt damage. If you use Strionic Resonator
then, you will be able to copy one instance of those triggers, basically bouncing 1 creature per player + 1 additional creature for one of those players.
Now if you copy Guttersnipe
's ability, not the Sigil's, you'll deal 4 damage and bounce 2 creatures per opponent. Doing this is far more impactful than the previous scenario.

I disagree Absinthman. Using Resonator is functionally simlar to having 2 Sigil of Sleep enchanting the same Guttersnipe . By copying, it basically says "Do whatever you're allowed to do, then do it again"

@ljs54321: Problem is that Sigil of Sleep will see your Guttersnipe deal 2 damage to, let's say 3 players. Each of those damage dealing events is viewed separately and thus three separate triggers will be put onto the stack, each saying basically "return target creature damaged player controls to its owner's hand". When you activate Strionic Resonator , you can choose any one of those triggered abilities and copy it. It's all because the ability that Sigil creates is not put onto the stack as a whole, but rather for each player separately.

The best way around the confusion is to just copy Guttersnipe 's ability then. Thanks!

I agree though it woukd trigger seperatley and only copy against one opponent because im copying an effect not the enchantment.

I guess we could summon Epochalyptik or someone, to help us resolve this.

Absinthman is correct. If you use Strionic Resonator to copy Sigil of Sleeps triggered ability, you get to return one additional creature from any opponent.
I'm going to use a different example to illustrate this. Suppose I activate Elspeth, Sun's Champion 's +1 while Purphoros, God of the Forge is on the battlefield. Although one effect put the tokens on the battlefield, Purphoros's ability will trigger three times for 2 damage each, not once for 6 damage. The same applies here. Multiple instances of the triggering event trigger it multiple times, it does not combine into one big trigger.

@Absinthman has the best answer, just remember Sigil of Sleep does not cast a spell it just affects when damage is dealt.
Cool!

My mistake was forgetting that everyday definitions don't always work when it comes to MTG. When I see "copy", to me it says "What does this card say?" and then repeats it.
Example: Guttersnipe says "Hey everyone. take 2 damage each"
Sigil of Sleep says "If you took damage, raise you hand. Now pick up a creature"
Strionic Resonator says "That looks like fun so we're gonna do it twice. Who took damage?'' since it says "whenever enchanted creature deals damage to a player..." and since it doesn't target any players, the copied trigger would do just like the original trigger and affect anyone the original trigger affected
In some cases, that seems to be exactly how it works, and other times, apparently it's not.

@ljs54321: It depends on the case. All abilities written in the same form behave the same way. That's why Magic has templating. In this case, we're dealing with abilities that trigger for multiple instances of an event that happen simultaneously. Each of those instances is still a separate event, though.

it would return 2 creatures.
Guttersnipe only activates if you cast a sorcery or instant, not if you cast a copy of that spell. This is of course my understanding from a question I have asked about copying spells.
