Does Strata Scythe + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth Work?

Asked by Trabant777 13 years ago

If i exile a Swamp with Strata Scythe and I have an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth on the board does the equipped creature get +1/+1 for every land on the board?

yup, that's how it works. Legit combo, btw. Dump a Filth in the graveyard, lolz ensue.

No. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth does not change the name of any land on the battlefield, it just adds the type "Swamp" to them. Strata Scythe 's bonus is concerned with the name of the exiled card and the names of the lands on the battlefield, so it does not look at types. Urborg will do nothing for you here.

At least, that's how I understand the card. It appears some searches are yielding different results...

Ok, so I've got a yes and a no... I'm not sure who is right here, although Epochalyptik is making sense to me, can I get some more clarification here please?

After doing some more Googling, it seems that a lot of people believe that the combo works, but in each blog/thread/post where the name vs. type argument is brought up, it seems to be accepted.

By reading the card itself, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth does indeed add a type instead of changing the name, since it is worded in a way that makes it clear that Swamp is the type, and an additional type rather than a name.

I'm gonna go with no. Final answer.

i dont see how people think it works unless they think the equipment looks for type insted of name

ther is no posible way this combo could work

I suppose that most people who believe it works are only paying attention to the first five words on Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth , forgetting or not realizing that Swamp is a type and not a name.

It's also confusing because Strata Scythe checks the name of the cards, whereas Nightmare Lash and Lashwrithe (the two other non-land combo cards most often used with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth) only check type. Therefore, both Nightmare Lash and Lashwrithe do work, which might lead people to believe that Strata Scythe does as well.
