Does protection prevent combat damage from being dealt?

Asked by dude9914 11 years ago

I have High Priest of Penance on the battlefield and swing. My opponent has mono-colored blocker that can deal leathal to my priest. If I use Brave the Elements after block are declared, is combat damage still applied to my priest theyby triggering the priest's ability, but preventing it from dying?

Nope. Protection says that damage can't be dealt to the protected object. So the damage isn't taken and prevented, it never happens. Your High Priest of Penance wouldn't destroy anything.

Protection prevents all types of damage. Your High Priest of Penance won't trigger if you give it protection from a blocker.

No, High Priest of Penance 's ability won't go off. If a permanent has protection from a source all damage that would be dealt to it by a spell or permanent it would have protection from is prevented.

Rules text from the Comprehensive Rules for administrative purposes ;)

702.16. Protection

702.16a Protection is a static ability, written Protection from [quality]. This quality is usually a color (as in protection from black) but can be any characteristic value. [...]

702.15e Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player with protection is prevented.

Right. I misworded my response. The damage is dealt, but prevented, so it never reaches the High Priest of Penance . Thanks, JasonD.

Seems like your question has already been answered, however, if you want to keep your High Priest of Penance after combat and still trigger its ability, you can always either make it indestructible (with Indestructibility or Boros Charm , for example) or regenerate it (with Golgari Charm or Boon of Erebos , for example).
