Does Heroic remain on top of the stack after a 2nd spell is cast on the creature?

Asked by TySherwood 11 years ago

I'm a bit unsure about the order of events with Heroic, so here's the scenario:

I cast Madcap Skills on my Favored Hoplite . To my understanding, the enchantment goes on the stack, then the Heroic trigger then goes on top of that.

An opponent then casts Shock on the hoplite. Would the shock go on top of the stack, resolving before the trigger and killing the hoplite, or does Heroic trigger as soon as I cast the enchantment, therefore triggering Heroic first, regardless of subsequent spells cast, and preventing death by shock?

I'm also wondering if this would work the same way as this scenario:

I have a Young Pyromancer , cast Shock , the pryomancer's trigger goes above shock on the stack, and then an opponent Cancel s the shock. Would the cancel resolve first, preventing the elemental creature, or does simply casting shock trigger his ability, and it resolves regardless of what's happening on the stack?

Any clarification on this would be appreciated, and would prevent a lot of arguments and destroyed friendships. Thanks!

Once an ability has triggered, it goes on the stack and can be responded to like a spell.

In the first case, your opponent can shock your Favored Hoplite before it's heroic trigger resolves, killing it (and making you lose your Madcap Skills). In the second case, your opponent can Cancel the Shock. However, the trigger will already be on the stack, and the fact that your Shock has been countered will not invalidate the trigger. You will still get your 1/1 elemental.

When a triggered ability is put onto the stack, it doesn't resolve immediately. Just like any other spell or ability, players will get a chance to make responses before it resolves. Those responses will enter the stack on top of the triggered ability, and will therefore resolve before it does.

In your first example, the Shock kills Favored Hoplite before his Heroic trigger resolves.

In your second example, countering the spell that triggered Young Pyromancer doesn't change the fact that he triggered. When that triggered ability resolves you'll get the Elemental, regardless of what happened to the triggering spell (or even the Pyromancer).

  1. You cast madcap targeting the hoplite, the heroic triggers as mad cap is cast, mad goes on the stack, then the trigger goes on the stack, then shock is cast and goes on the stack. shock resolves, before the tirggers goes to resolve, there is a round of priority for things to happen, before you get priority to do anything, state based actions are checked. hoplight dies and both the heroic trigger and skills fizzle. last chance to save the hoplight is before the shock resolves (i.e. cast Gods Willing to give it pro-red and another counter).

  2. yp triggers is as shock is cast. ishock goes on the stack. trigger goes on the stack, cancel is cast and goes on the stack, cancel resolves, countering the shock, yp trigger resolves and you get the token. If the cancel didn't happen, you would get the token, before shock resolves. Same with the coutners, if they the hoplight survived it would get the counters before madcap resolved.
