Does enchantments that are attached to a players permanents get destroyed when the player that they are on dies?

Asked by Dorkstinn 11 years ago

If in a multiplayer game if I play something such as Pacifism or Detention Sphere on one of my opponent's creatures, and then that player dies. Do the enchantments stay on the battlefield, or do they go to the grave? Mainly would they count towards enchantments such as Ethereal Armor and Sphere of Saftey?

Only Auras attach themselves to other permanents, like Pacifism . Detention Sphere does not attach itself to anything.

The aura will become unattached to the permanent it's enchanting, and be put into the graveyard as a state-based action.

Pacifism is an Aura. If the enchanted creature's controller leaves the game, the enchanted creature will leave the game, and Pacifism will be put into your graveyard as a state-based action.

Detention Sphere is just a regular enchantment, so it will stay on the battlefield.

It depends. Detention Sphere will remain, Pacifism will not. Auras go to the graveyard when they are no longer attached to a permanent.

Note that only creatures can "die".

Also, the aura in this case isn't even technical "destroyed", as it isn't being affected by a destroy-effect like Naturalize . It's simply being put into the graveyard from the battlefield.

Doesn't die mean the equivalent of "When ___ is put into the graveyard from the battlefield"? So technically, ANY permanent can die...they just aren't worded that way ;)

""Dies" is shorthand for "is put into a graveyard from the battlefield" that's used exclusively to refer to creatures."

source look for the keyword "Dies"

Correct it says "Specifically" so they could alter this for the next set with enchantment removal...oooooooohhhhh wouldn't THAT be awesome! lol

It wouldn't make much sense to alter how "dies" is used in templating. Only creatures can die. Why would inanimate objects like enchantments "die" (in the figurative sense)? Also, changing the templating wouldn't change anything about the game mechanics.
