Do Hideaway cards obey timing restrictions?
Asked by Skull_Creed 11 years ago
This may be an older question, but I've had a difficult time looking it up. For example, with Spinerock Knoll , if an opponent is dealt 7 or more damage on another opponent's turn, could you in turn activate Spinerock Knoll 's ability to cast a spell that would normally have to be Sorcery speed? Thanks!

@billpasdmf: That's not how it works.
"Timing restriction" is really a misnomer, because the timing system for Magic isn't based on restrictions, but rather on permissions. Normally you're only able to cast a Sorcery during a main phase on your turn when the stack is empty, but that's because the base rules of the game only give you permission to do it at that time. It's possible to get additional permissions or instructions from other effects, like Quicken (as though it had flash), Epic Experiment (during the resolution of a spell), Knowledge Pool (during the resolution of a triggered ability), etc. Several of the effects that do things like this wouldn't work at all if the timing rules were restriction-based.
In the case of the Hideaway lands, the card is played during the resolution of the activated ability, which can be activated at any time you have priority (often called "instant speed"). The only time this doesn't work is if the exiled card is a land, because the rules do specifically restrict land-plays to main phases on your turn when the stack is empty (and only if you haven't already played a land).

So, unless the card is a land, I can cast the card on another players turn regardless of the speed it would normally have?

Yes, as long as you also met the special condition on the Hideaway land (or the card itself gives itself a special restriction on when it can be cast, like Savage Beating or Necrologia ).

The Knoll is only imposing a replacement effect on the casting cost of the spell. All other restrictions would still apply. Sorceries, creatures, etc. could still only be played during the main phases of your turn.
