Do creatures have to die to be considered destroyed?

Asked by Yesterday 4 years ago

This feels like a dumb question.

I control both a Corpse Connoisseur on the turn it has been Unearthed; and my commander, The Scorpion God.

My opponent flashes in a Decree of Pain and, because I am an idiot, I decide to put my commander into the Command Zone when it leaves the battlefield. So both creatures have had their dying replaced with other actions.

Does my opponent draw any cards?

Your opponent draws cards for both creatures being destroyed.

In both cases, replacement effects are replacing where the card goes after it leaves the battlefield. Decree of Pain doesn't care where the cards go, only that they were destroyed (leaving the battlefield due to "destroy" effects). Even though you're replacing the destination with exile for Corpse Connoisseur and the command zone for The Scorpion God, they were still destroyed, and thus Decree still lets your opponent draw cards from that.
