Deflecting Palm vs Niv Mizzet

Asked by snowinsummer 5 years ago

My friend has Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and uses Enter the Infinite. In response I cast Deflecting Palm on the source niv. Does this reflect all of the combos damage?

Unfortunately Deflecting Palm will only prevent (and deal) one damage total.

The reason is that each single card draw is a separate event. Enter the Infinite will trigger Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind a number of times equal to the number of cards in your friend's library, and each of those triggers will do one damage as they each resolve. Deflecting Palm is only looking for the next single time the source you choose deals damage, which is going to be only one of those triggers.

You will only deflect 1 point of damage.

Notice that Deflecting Palm says "The next time a source of your choice would deal damage to you this turn[...]". This means that it will only prevent damage 1 time, even if the chosen source is dealing damage multiple times.

Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind would trigger for each card drawn with Enter the Infinite rather than triggering once for a single batch of damage. You can easily confirm this by checking the Gatherer page on the card where the second ruling says "If a spell or ability causes you to draw multiple cards, Niv-Mizzet’s ability triggers that many times."

Therefore, only the 1 damage from the first trigger can be prevented and reflected while the rest will go through and likely kill you. To prevent all of the damage, you would need a card that says it prevents all damage from a chosen source (such as Burrenton Forge-Tender).
