Crypt Ghast + Urborg/Blanket of Night

Asked by Caligula 10 years ago

So, I was thinking about Crypt Ghast and I was shuffling through some cards I had and I noticed Blanket of Night .

Now that every land is a "Swamp" in addition to it's type. Does this mean that If you play a Crypt Ghast and you have either Blanket of Night or Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Does that mean every one of your lands would tap to produce a swamp? Regardless of Color?

Yes, that's why Primeval Titan is banned in Commander, with it you go get Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Cabal Coffers and precede to go insane.

Rules questions should be asked in the Q&A, which is linked in the header bar. I can't move this to the Q&A, so I'm moving it to BE.

Yes, but note that you tap for black mana. "Swamp" is a basic land type; you tap Swamps to produce mana, not to produce Swamps.

In this situation, Crypt Ghast 's triggered mana ability would trigger each time you tap a land for mana.

@IzexD: That's not quite the reason. According to the RC, Primeval Titan warped the format by "forcing" players to copy or remove it. While the Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Cabal Coffers interaction was probably in the back of their minds, they cited the social reasons as the primary impetus for the decision.

Not to derail the thread, but I disagree heartily with their decision.

Also, the word you want is "proceed." "Precede" means "to come before."

Epochalyptik thanks for clearing that up for me. I thought that there would be an interesting interaction between those two somehow.\

And yes, You are right. I just botched my terminology when I was referencing the Swamps producing black mana.

And I could see how Primeval Titan would be a pretty rude in EDH, But there's far more "Unfair" combos than that I would assume to be legal still.

Oh well, Maybe that's why I haven't delved into EDH yet.

I always forget about that damn header bar too. I looked through the Forums tab and I was like "Wtf, I was sure there was a Q&A in here somewhere". Alas.. It get's it's own tab.

Well, this is already in the off-topic area.

I highly suggest looking into EDH. There's an article on my profile page to get you started.

As for the ban, it's one of those things about the RC. I don't agree with some of their decisions, and I'd probably run the format a little differently, but it's their creation. I just disagree with the assessment that PrimeTime is the kind of card they think it is.

I agree, PrimeTime is a really great card on it's own. But without the Ramp to get to it, It can be tough to achieve a big combo like that.

..Not unless the other player doesn't know how the titan can affect the board and let's him slide.

I will look into it. But no-one I know plays EDH, My roommate bought an EDH deck a while back (The one with Oloro as commander) and he hasn't touched it since he bought it lol.

And isn't commander more a multiplayer game?

Commander can be either 1v1 or multiplayer. 1v1 has a variant (look up "French EDH" or "Duel Commander") managed by another third-party group. I play a lot of 1v1, but my main deck is optimized for multiplayer.

Check around and see if there's any interest. Worst-case, you build a deck and take it to major events (if you attend those) and play between rounds or post-drop.

I'll definitely look into it some more after i've read through your articles.

Seems interesting enough, I didn't know your commander had to match the color scheme of your deck. That's pretty interesting.

When your making a commander deck though do you usually focus on combos or synergies?

One EDH deck i've seen on here abuses Volrath the Fallen perfectly IMO.

But it also seems that EDH can get pricey pretty fast (If you dont already have a decent stockpile of cards)

Mind you, You aren't updating your deck nearly as often to keep up with the sets, I guess I'll just have to throw a deck together and try it out :P

If you want a good starting point, I'd advise getting one of the C13 Commander decks, I've personally have played single and multiplayer games with all 5 decks, and they all have been a blast. My favorite one is the Eternal Bargain deck, using Oloro, Ageless Ascetic as the Commander. There are some cool card interactions in the deck gaining life, Serra Avatar + Wall of Reverence is a really fun combo, that can get dumb fast.
