Countering Trigger and Activated Abilities?
Asked by jotjot 11 years ago
Scenario 1:if a triggered ability goes on the stack, then a spell would destroy the source, will the trigger ability be countered, or be put on the stack?
-Opponent casts Acidic Slime -When Acidic Slime enters the battlefield (ETB), it will destroy a land.-I cast Murder on the stack targeting Acidic Slime .
Scenario 2:If an activated ability goes on the stack, then a spell would destroy the source, will the activated ability be countered, or be put on the stack?-Opponent activates Dark Impostor 's ability which exiles a creature.-I cast Murder on the stack targeting Dark Impostor .
Something to remember is that you would have to wait until Acidic Slime resolved before you could target it with Murder . The only way to remove something from the stack other than resolving is countering and cards that specifically remove things from the stack (Venser, Shaper Savant and Mindbreak Trap )

Activated abilities and triggered abilities, once activated or triggered, exist and resolve independent of their source. In both scenarios, the ability will resolve as best it can. Acidic Slime 's ability will resolve as normal. Dark Impostor 's ability will be unable to place a +1+1 counter on Dark Impostor , but it will still exile the target.
