Casting and flashing Ignite the Future in the same turn

Asked by brcap 4 years ago

If you were to cast and Flashback Ignite the Future in the same turn, would all 6 exiled cards be free to play, or only the latter 3? Similarly, if you flash it back the turn after it was cast - having not played the first 3 exiled cards - would they then become free to play upon resolving the flashbacked spell?

Cheers.

To your first question, only the latter three cards could be cast without paying their mana cost, as they are the only cards that were exiled with the Ignite the Future cast from the graveyard. The first three cards were exiled with the version of Ignite cast from a zone other than the graveyard, so their mana cost must be paid.

The answer to your second question is basically the same. Casting Ignite the Future from a graveyard (in this case with flashback) doesn't change how the previous version of the spell was cast, and thus how the previously-exiled spells may be cast. Only the three spells exiled by the flashed-back version of Ignite may be cast without paying their mana cost.

Ignite the future specifically says that you can cast "those" cards without paying so only the second set would be free. This answer works for the second part of your question too. Only "those" cards would be free from only the Ignite the Future from the graveyard.

I don't think syntax solves it, as the word "those" clearly refers to the first 3 cards in exile, as it appears in the first sentence. The confusion from syntax comes from the latter half of the card saying "you may play cards this way" and not "you may play THOSE cards this way" which would clearly refer to those in exile from the flashback .
I'm aware that each casting of the spell is unique and generally does not 'remember' any previous casting, though this is somewhat confused by exile until your next turn mechanic. Wizards also seems to be moving away from this. ie. Karn, Scion of Urza 's silver counters. That card is very clear, though. this one... less so.

"This way" always refers only to earlier effects of the same spell or ability. Just as Agent of Masks and Blood Tyrant do not bolster each other's effect, a flashed back Ignite the Future will not modify any other Ignite the Future 's cards.

It is specifically because each casting of Ignite the Future doesn't "remember" any other castings. You may have cards exiled by a previous version of Ignite the Future , but each casting will only care about the cards it itself exiles.

Because of this, only the cards exiled by the cast-from-graveyard version will be free to cast, no matter how many other cards have been exiled by other castings.

The same would apply if you were to cast three copies of Ignite the Future from your hand in a single turn, and then flash one back. Only the three cards exiled by that flashback will be free. The other nine will still cost as normal.
