Cascade, Enchant Creature
Asked by Affkopp 8 years ago
If I cascade into an aura, but I don't have any creatures on the battlefield, does the Cascade end there because I cannot cast this spell or can I cast it without having an effect, put it on the graveyard and continue to cascade?
Cascade (like on Bloodbraid Elf) finds the first nonland card with a lower CMC. If the card has no legal targets you cannot cast it and all exiled cards get put on the bottom of your library in a random order. If it has legal targets but you don't want to cast it you may choose not to and put all the cards on the bottom in a random order. Note that even if you don't have any creatures, if your opponent does you may choose to cast the aura targeting one of their creatures unless it has "enchant creature you control."

So if the spell cannot be cast, I have to put it pack in random order on the bottom of my library because I cannot cast it. So this spell did not have cascade because it was not casted. I know I can still cast other spells from my hand but I was asking about this particular "cascade row". So I guess this ends there. Is that right?

Looking at a card like Ardent Plea, you can see that it says to exile cards from the top of library until you exile something with lower CMC, like a Hyena Umbra. Then you may cast that card. However, if there are no legal targets, you can't cast Hyena Umbra. The cascade ability doesn't care if the card is castable or not, and so all of the exiled cards, including Hyena Umbra, would be put on the bottom of your library.

If there is no legal target, the spell cannot be cast.
Note that this does not "end" your cascade (unless you have a specific example or card that you are asking about). Maelstrom Wanderer makes you do it again anyways, and Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder doesn't give cascade to spells you're casting off a cascade trigger. So whether you can cast it or not, shouldn't make a difference in continuing to cascade.
