Cascade
Asked by LordofInfect 13 years ago
Does cascade resolve on itself
Meaning if i use Captured Sunlight to cascade Into a bloodbraid Elf
Does it keep going?

Think about it like this:
You play your first spell and it triggers Maelstrom Nexus , giving it cascade X where X is the mana cost of the spell played. Then when a spell comes up that has a mana cost of X-1 or less you can cast it. If that spell had cascade as well, a new cascade will trigger for a new value Y where Y is the mana cost of the second spell played. Then you reveal cards until you hit a spell with mana cost Y-1 or less. This will continue until you find a spell without cascade. Each instance of cascade is separate and has different stipulations depending on the mana cost of the different spells.

Maelstrom Nexus will not stack, since it specifies that only the FIRST spell you cast each turn has cascade.

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood the question. Multiple instances of cascade DO stack. (If that's what you meant).

Also, mailstrom nexus does not have a triggered ability.

I know its a continuous effect I was just trying to help visualize that only the first spell would be given cascade. As if it did trigger and only spell #1 would trigger it. I hope that makes sense.

It makes sense. Though I personally a strong habit of using the correct terminology. It helps newer players alot when terms aren't used randomly for different things.
But, carry on.

What I mean when I said it stacks is if you cast one from your hand does it cascade on itself

If you play a spell with cascade, It will cascade twice but not simultaneously.

If you cast Maelstrom Nexus, it will not be on the battlefield until it finishes resolving, so its static effect will not be in effect. You do not cascade when you cast Maelstrom Nexus. It needs to actually be on the battlefield when the first spell each turn is cast.
If you already control a Maelstrom Nexus, however, and cast another Maelstrom Nexus and it is the first spell you've cast that turn, then yes, you will cascade. Once it resolves, the first spell you cast each turn will have two instances of cascade, each of which will trigger and resolve properly.

in this case no, because Captured Sunlight and Bloodbraid Elf have the same casting cost. You'd have to keep revealing cards until you find a card with a CMC of 3 or less. If the first card with 3 or less revealed is another cascade card such as Violent Outburst the first cascade ability will resolve and the cascade ability of Violent Outburst goes on the stack and you continue revealing cards until one with CMC of 2 or less is revealed.
