Can "protection" stack?
Asked by vic 11 months ago
I control an Akroma, Vision of Ixidor and I play an Akroma, Angel of Wrath. Does Akroma, Angel of Wrath get the +1/+1 once or twice from Protection from black and from red? I'm guessing it's just one.
The original printing said "protection from black, protection from red". Would that have made it any different?

It counts for two. Based on the detailed rules for the Protection ability, "protection from black and from red" is shorthand for "protection from black, protection from red", like you see in the original printed version.
702.16g “Protection from [quality A] and from [quality B]” is shorthand for “protection from [quality A]” and “protection from [quality B]”; it behaves as two separate protection abilities.
702.16h “Protection from each [characteristic]” is shorthand for “protection from [quality A],” “protection from [quality B],” and so on for each possible quality the listed characteristic could have; it behaves as multiple separate protection abilities.
702.16i “Protection from each [set of characteristics, qualities, or players]” is shorthand for “protection from [A],” “protection from [B],” and so on for each characteristic, quality, or player in the set. It behaves as multiple separate protection abilities.

The Gatherer page for Akroma, Vision of Ixidor says that each keyword only counts as one, even if you have multiple instances of the same keyword:
11/10/2020 A creature with more than one instances of one of the listed keywords gets just +1/+1 for that keyword. Similarly, if a creature has multiple variants of the same keyword (e.g. protection from black and from red), it gets just +1/+1 for that keyword.

I'll walk back what I said and agree with veritablecvn instead. Reading Akroma, Vision of Ixidor's text more carefully, it cares about whether the creature has a protection ability at all, not how many it has.

this isn't really "stacking" since it's 2 different abilities. it would get +1/+1 once from pro-black, and +1/+1 once from pro-red. the new wording is just for the sake of using fewer words, and doesn't change the functionality of the card.
