Can I use Zealous Conscripts on my own permanents like an Island or Gilded Lotusfoil

Asked by neutral 11 years ago

Recent argument during a match at FNM led to him questioning this. Just curious if I have been playing my deck illegally. What happened was I dropped Gilded Lotus followed by Deadeye Navigator followed by Zealous Conscripts . I used Zealous Conscripts to untap Gilded Lotus when it came into the battlefield then used Deadeye Navigator to shift in and out to achieve infinite mana. Is this legal?

this is perfectly legal. When a card like Zealous Conscripts says "target permanent", it can be any permanent, regardless of whether you control it. This is a perfectly legal way to generate infinte mana. If it was a creature you dn't control, the card would specify. AN example of this is Downsize .

Yes, because Zealous Conscripts text says nothing about who currently controls the target permanent or who owns it, you may pick any target as long as it is a permanent that was on the board when the effect triggered.

Don't spend all that mana in one place. haha

For an example of a creature that would not work Conquering Manticore . Note the wording on it and compare it to Zealous Conscripts .

Deadeye Navigator bonded to Zealous Conscripts . use Gilded Lotus ' mana to activate the bounce. When Zealous Conscripts ETB it untaps Gilded Lotus netting 1 mana.
