Can I Suddenly Spoil Kiki-Jiki?
Asked by MountainMan817 10 years ago
Say I'm playing against some Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Restoration Angel combo deck, can I play Sudden Spoiling in response to Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker tapping or does the ability still resolve and have the combo only produce 1 copy of Restoration Angel ?
yup. Once the ability is put on the stack, it's resolves independent of the source. but it gets a 0/2 resto with no etb ability :)

@gufymike: The token copy of Restoration Angel isn't affected by Sudden Spoiling (it only affects creatures currently on the battlefield as it resolves). However, the combo is still broken because Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker has lost all his abilities.

Wouldn't the token copy then enter, blink Kiki, and allow the combo to continue? Or did I miss something?

Unfortunately, the combo isn't broken, since the new token can flicker the spoiled Kiki-Jiki, who will have his ability again.

Better to wait until your opponent attacks with their token army and spoil them then.

@Rhadamanthus: The combo is not necessarily broken, since the Angel could just blink Kiki-Jiki, who would then return to the battlefield as a new object not affected by Sudden Spoiling .

I would think the token copied a 0/2 resto when checking upon resolution.

@gufymike: The modifications created by Sudden Spoiling do not become part of the creature's copiable characteristics. Whenever a copy is made of a creature, the copy is of that creature before any modifications that were not themselves created by copy effects. This is why things like abilities granted by Auras do not get copied. The same rule extends to the changes made by Sudden Spoiling . The token will be an unspoiled angel.

Argh, sorry. For some reason I was thinking an untap effect like Deceiver Exarch or Pestermite . All you others are right: combo not broken.

Once on the stack, an ability exists independently of its source. Playing Sudden Spoiling will not counter the ability, nor will it remove the ability from the stack.
