can I equip in response to an instant?

Asked by Martymo 13 years ago

So I know I can doom blade or GftT or Dismember in response to an equipping, but can I equip Sword of Feast and Famine in response to Dismember to protect my creature?

What about if I have Puresteel Paladin ? Does that effect it at all?

Thanks in advance.

702.6a Equip is an activated ability of Equipment cards. "Equip [cost]" means "[Cost]: Attach this permanent to target creature you control. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery."

Since equipping is a sorcery-speed action, you may not activate an equip ability unless it is your main phase and the stack is empty. This means you cannot do it in response to something.

Leonin Shikari is the only card which allows you to activate equip abilities at instant-speed. Other cards such as Brass Squire attack equipment to creatures without actually using the equip ability. Puresteel Paladin only affects equip cost, not timing.

Equip's full text reads "[Cost]: Attach this permanent to target creature you control. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery."

The last sentence being the pertinent one here. Since it's sorcery speed, no, you cannot use equipment to respond.

However, there are a few effects to get around this. Brass Squire is a Myr who can attach things at instant speed (since you're using his ability to do it, not the equip ability). Out of Standard, there's Leonin Shikari .
