Can i counter my own spells with Epic experiment

Asked by smarkham 12 years ago

Say i cast Epic Experiment for 4. i get 2 Pillar of Flame and 2 Counterflux . I have a Nivmagus Elemental on the board. Can I cast the pillars and then counter them but exile all of them with nivmagus before they resolve?

You can cast all four spells. Your counterfluxes can target your Pillars, no problem. Then, before anyhing starts resolving, you can respond by exiling your spells from the stack.

Actually Absinthman that is wrong. Counterflux can only counter spells you don't control.

Unless there's another spell on the stack that you don't control, then you can't play the Counterflux es and they just go to the graveyard, as part of Epic Experiment 's effect.

Ouch, this is what I deserve for not reading the whole card!

wow good catch Dallie thank you. Would it work if i had 2 Spell Rupture s instead?

I run 4x in my Grixis control, so I use them quite frequently, that's probably why I caught it.

Any counterspell that can legally target your Pillar of Flame s would work. Spell Rupture would work.

Good catch Dallie. Obviously, this works the way you want it to if the counterspells are Cancel or Dispel instead of Counterflux . It's up to you if you think that makes it worth replacing Counterflux with Cancel or something else like Izzet Charm . For the counterspells to be put on the stack, you just have to have a legal target. In that same situation with Cancel , you could even put them on the stack each targeting the same Pillar of Flame and then remove only the Cancel s to Nivmagus Elemental for +4/+4 and point the burn at blockers or planeswalkers.

CrazyHD: Cancel is correct, but Dispel will NOT counter Pillar of Flame as it is not an instant, but a sorcery.

But I think we all get the point now.

If you Exile two spells that can counter Pillar of Flame , then you may cast them targeting Pillar of Flame , and use Nivmagus Elemental to exile all or some of the spells.

Similar with X cost spells. Cast them for 0 (no other choice) with Epic Experiment and then exile them with Nivmagus Elemental
