Can an Emblem be targeted with removal?

Asked by EddCrawley 12 years ago

Bit of a noob question, I know, but something I was wondering. Can an Emblem given by any number of Planeswalkers ultimates be removed, as is it a permanent?

It is not a permanent. Emblems are objects in the command zone, not permanents, and there is no way to get rid of them at all. See rule 113, especially 113.5.

On a related note, could you counter (with something like Stifle ) the abilities of an emblem like venser's?

No to both questions. It's impossible to get rid of an emblem. (until wizards makes a card that says "Destroy target emblem" or something dumb). PotatoPi - I dont think this would work because the abilities arent triggered or activated.

I meant for something like Venser, the Sojourner 's emblem (whenever you cast a spell, exile target permanent), could you stifle it when they cast a spell?

PotatoPi I think that is a passive ability

In that case, yes, as Venser's emblem's ability is triggered and put on the stack.

Just occurred to me, since emblems can't be removed in any way, that means Worldfire + Koth of the Hammer 's emblem is a viable combo. Not that it's any good though.

FYI, the ruling:

1/1/2011: Venser's last ability creates an emblem with a triggered ability. The emblem is the source of the triggered ability. Because emblems are colorless, you can target permanents with protection from white or from blue, for example, with the triggered ability. Whenever you cast a spell, the emblem's ability triggers and goes on the stack on top of it. It will resolve before the spell does.

Okay, thanks

couldn't Karn Liberated 's ult take care of emblems? but if your worried about emblems, is a 30 dollar card worth it. maybe faster aggro or more control would take care of those pesky planeswalkers.

@reidfriedbeans: Yes.

6/1/2011: Players won't have any poison counters or emblems they had in the original game.

@TheSeventhNinja: A triggered ability is any ability beginning with the word at, when, or whenever. A static ability simply states something.

If you have Stifle , use it on the Venser ability that makes the Emblem.

What SGB517 said. Stifle Venser's ultimate, then get rid of him before he gets the chance to build up enough loyalty counters again.
