Can a colored card have no color identity?

Asked by Rambolicious_0 6 years ago

Hypothetically, if Ancestral Vision had Suspend— {1} instead of {u}, would it be a blue card with no color identity?

Does/Can such a card exist?

For reference:

903.4. The Commander variant uses color identity to determine what cards can be in a deck with a certain commander. The color identity of a card is the color or colors of any mana symbols in that card's mana cost or rules text, plus any colors defined by its characteristic-defining abilities (see rule 604.3) or color indicator (see rule 204).

Since color identity is also determined by characteristic defining abilities and color indicators, probably not.

Also, even if Ancestral Vision had suspend--, it will have a color identity of blue since it has a color indicator of blue. The color indicator is printed to the left of the type line. For Ancestral Vision the color indicator is also retroactively applied since it is specified in its rules text.

Oh, I had thought color indicators only defined color, not identity.

As noted in the rule about color identity, color indicator is also used.

That's why Archangel Avacyn  Flip has a color identity of white and red.

There are no colored cards with a colorless color identity.

A colorless card can have a colored identity, such as Elder Deep-Fiend which has a blue color identity, or Bosh, Iron Golem which has a red color identity.

The inverse is not possible under the definition of color identity, previously posted.
