Brass Squire and O-Naginata interaction.

Asked by JuQ 6 years ago

Simple question. Can I use Brass Squire's activated ability to attach O-Naginata to itself? (assuming nothing else is modifying it's power, obviously).

I can't find any specific rulings or rules to quote about this, but so far as I understand it, no. O-Naginata's first static ability does 2 things: First, it prevents the card from becoming attached to a creature with less than 3 power. Second, it causes the card to become unattached if the creature it's attached to has less than 3 power.

None of this interacts directly with the Equip keyword ability, so if, hypothetically, this was allowed, then there'd be no reason you couldn't just equip it the normal way to any old 1/1, which we know is not the case.

On the other hand, if you cast, say, Giant Growth on a 1/1, then equip the Naginata, it won't fall off when the growth wears off, unless something else drops the creature's power below 3.

Thank you for your response. I thought O-Naginata restriction made the target illegal for de Equip ability but you could bypass it the same way you bypass Shroud when moving an auras using Crown of the Ages.

Yeah, that's a very different scenario though. The reason Auras can't be put on permanents with shroud is because you have to target them during the casting process. You can also circumvent Shroud/Hexproof with Auras simply by putting them into play without actually casting them. This can be done via card effects such as Obzedat's Aid, Silent Sentinel, or Felidar Guardian.
