Boros Garrison and fetch land?
Asked by BoxofScraps 14 years ago
If I play a fetch land first turn and dont crack yet then on turn two, play Boros Garrison, can i target the fetch land as the land i will return to my hand but then crack the fetch land and sacrifice it thus not having to return it to my hand? if that makes sense. or is the return land effect on Boros a requirement that must played? Thanks

The reason you can't do both is because it doesn't target more than anything. When the ability goes on the stack there is no target, you choose what land to return to your hand as it resolves.
That means you can't respond to it once you've chosen which land to return to your hand, which means you can't remove the target and counter the ability.
Stifle would work though.

Boros Garrison
Nope you can't do both. Say you have Arid Mesa on the field and on your second turn, you put Boros Garrison onto the battlefield and its activated ability (of you returning a land to your hand) goes on the stack. Arid Mesa was chosen as the target and before it resolves, you use Arid Mesa 's activated ability to fetch a Plains /Mountain , placing it onto the battlefield. So when Boros Garrison 's on-the-stack ability resolves, Arid Mesa 's already not a legal target (as you had already sacrificed it). So you either have to return the Plains /Mountain you fetched or Boros Garrison back into your hand.
