Boom: Detention Sphere

Asked by FALLEN-X-ANGEL 9 years ago

I'm just curious about the interaction with Detention Sphere

Say an opponent has Goblin Guide out and attacks me like usual. The other player has Detention Sphere and exiles that only one. The opponent said that it only exiles all the other permanents with the same name which are already out.

Other games i've seen it used in these ways, you play it, you exile a card, any card they plan to put out with the same name can be cast but would be exiled by Detention Sphere . So, which is which?

tl;dr The first one is correct.

The detention sphere creates a trigger on the stack upon entering the battlefiled, which exiles all permanents (a permanent being a card or token on the battlefield) with the same name. It is NOT a static effect that is always applied.

To get the comparison, see Meddling Mage . This card has a static effect that says so long that it is on the battlefield, no cards with chosen name can be played, but they are not removed from play if they are already cast. Sphere has a one-time trigger upon entering the battlefield and deals with permanents that are already on the battlefield.

When Detention Sphere 's ETB is put onto the stack, you choose a target for it, which is any non-land permanent not named Detention Sphere, which must be on the battlefield at that time (because permanents only exist on the battlefied; elswere they are permanent cards). That permanent must also be targetable (must not have hexproof, shroud, or protection from any quality that Detention Sphere has). Next, when that ability resolves, it exiles targeted permanent and all other permanents with the same name, that are on the battlefield at that time. This same Detention Sphere has no effect on permanents with that name that enter the battlefield later. So if somebody was saying that any Goblin Guide that enters the battlefield after the Detention Sphere 's ETB ability resolves, will be exiled as well, that person was wrong.

If Detention Sphere were going to have an effect on any of that same card that is not currently on the field, it would expressly say so. Think Eradicate .

Fun side not. Eradicate and Wind Zendikon can really screw over mono colored decks. With a Dark Ritual you could kill almost all your opponent's lands on turn 2.
