Birthing pod ruling help

Asked by elfsaine 10 years ago

I was thinking of building a birthing pod deck. My idea was to ramp to four or five drops and pod up to eight. The ultimate goal is to pod from protean hulk to craterhoof behemoth. My understanding is the act of sacrificing the protean hulk satisfies its triggered ability. With no condition to make it a delayed trigger, it goes onto the stack. The stack then reasolves the triggered ability first, and then finishes the pod ability. Is this underatanding correct? If it is, what if i continue the chain? If i pod from craterhoof behemoth to artisan of kozilek, can i legaly target the behemouth to reanimate? Id you could explain why or why no would be great.

While I'm not sure on the first part, note that Artisan needs to be cast in order to reanimate. However, on a card like Phyrexian Delver or Karmic Guide (if they were 9 drops), it would work because craterhoof is hitting the grave before the ETB would trigger.

Rules questions should be asked in the Q&A, which is linked in the header bar. I can't convert this to a question thread, so I'm moving it to BE.

Link all cards in your question. There's a formatting guide at the bottom of the page.
Birthing Pod
Protean Hulk
Craterhoof Behemoth
Artisan of Kozilek

You sacrifice Protean Hulk to activate Birthing Pod 's ability. Protean Hulk 's ability triggers, but it doesn't go onto the stack until the next time a player would receive priority, which is after you finish activating Birthing Pod 's ability. Protean Hulk 's ability will be put onto the stack above Birthing Pod 's ability.

Protean Hulk 's ability will resolve first, allowing you to fetch the appropriate cards.

Then, Birthing Pod 's ability will resolve, and you'll get Craterhoof Behemoth . Craterhoof Behemoth 's ability will trigger (and, assuming there are no responses, it will resolve).

Note that podding Craterhoof Behemoth into Artisan of Kozilek doesn't actually net you very much. Artisan of Kozilek 's ability only triggers when you cast Artisan of Kozilek . You don't cast anything when Birthing Pod 's ability resolves; you put the creature card directly onto the battlefield.
