Aurelia, the Warleader
Asked by nathansampson 12 years ago
I attacked someone with here and several other creatures and they cast a spell to stop them and not untap during there next untap step. would there next untap step be right after the attack was over? Would they untap at the beginning of my next turn?

The Untap step is the very first step of a player's turn. If an effect says something doesn't untap during it's controller's Untap step, that's the only time it can stop the object from untapping. Any other effects that would untap the object at other times will work just fine.
Depending on what your opponent is playing in response, it's possible your example can't play out the way you describe it. The last opportunity a player has to tap down creatures and prevent them from being declared as attackers is during the Beginning of Combat step, before the Declare Attackers step starts. If the attacking player skips ahead to Declare Attackers without giving his opponent a chance to respond, he has to back up. If Aurelia is tapped down before being declared as an attacker (Gridlock, etc.), she can't attack and her ability can't trigger.

Whenever an effect mentions "next untap step," it refers to the actual Untap Phase at the beginning of each turn. Since Aurelia, the Warleader says to untap the creatures, they would still untap.
Your opponent would have to tap Aurelia before the Declare Attackers step to prevent the second combat phase.

If Aurelia becomes tapped prior to being declared as an attacker there will be no second combat phase. Effects that cause her or other creatures to not untap during their controller's next untap step would not prevent her ability from happening, as it is a triggered ability which untaps all creatures that player controls. It is not an untap step.

yeah, unless they say gave Sleep the ability to be played at instant speed. It really depends on how the card your opponent played was worded. But it would have to be done after Aurelia's combat trigger resolved.

Clinging Mists? The tap effect only takes place if you are at 5 or less life.
Since it says "tap all attacking creatures" the creatures have to already be declared as attackers before Clinging Mists can tap them. Since Aurelia's ability triggers when she's declared as an attacker, casting it during the first combat phase would not stop the second from occurring.
The most beneficial time to cast it would be during the second pre-combat phase. Assuming you somehow survived the first, that is.

Truthfully if Clinging Mists is cast during the first combat phase, combat damage won't be dealt during additional combat phases that turn either. If fateful hour applies, once Aurelia, the Warleader's trigger resolves there'd be no reason to attack during the second combat phase.

hey guys, newbie question, I attacked my Brother with Aurelia, the Warleader , Boros Reckoner , Thundermaw Hellkite , and Spark Trooper . He blocks the attack with Fog , because Fog says prevent all damage this turn, does that also prevent Aurelia's ability to be cancelled out for the second combat phase since its still my turn and has not ended yet?

Fog only prevents damage. It doesn't change the fact that some creatures, including Aurelia, the Warleader , attacked. However, Fog prevents all combat damage that would be dealt for the rest of the turn, so even though you get another combat phase you probably won't be able to do much of anything with it. At least all your creatures are untapped now.
For future reference, it's better to just post a brand new question topic in MTG Q&A so people can see it better. Resolved questions like this one cycle off of the front page within a couple days, so people will only know about comments in old topics like this one if they were part of the original conversation.

Your "untap step' happens once a turn, at the beginning of your turn. Do you know what spell they used to stop your attack?
