Are enchantments still spells after they are resolved?
Asked by JonKonKim 11 years ago
So if an enchantment/enchantment-aura/artifact is played and resolved and the next turn I draw a card that counters target spells, can I counter those cards or are they not spells anymore?
yeah it was a serious question...started like three weeks ago. I knew creatures were only spells while on stack, but for some reason I kept thinking enchantment, etc. were different. They just seemed more "spell" like, so I thought they might be different, but I guess not. Thank you! I've been trying to Redirect encantment-auras this whole time!!

So that means technically Emrakul, the Aeons Torn can be affected by colored permanents, right?

Uh, you can redirect auras. lol They target things on the stack, and are spells on the stack.

Note that O Ring doesn't target when it's a spell, it has an ETB trigger that targets as a permanent. So it can not be Redirected.

Cards are Spells with their respective types when they are on the stack, cards with their respective types whilst in your hand, graveyard or library, and Permanents with their respective types whilst on the battlefield.
For example:
A creature spell whilst on the stack.
A creature card whilst in your hand, library or graveyard.
And a permanent, creature, human, soldier whilst on the battlefield.

These distinctions are important for figuring out how spells interact.

Auras (enchant ceature spells) require a target to be designated as they are cast from your hand, seeing as how they are spells at this point (they are going onto the stack) they can't target Emarkul because of his protection.

303.4a: An Aura spell requires a target, which is restricted by its enchant ability.

An amendment to my earlier description of champion of the parish.
For example:
Champion of the Parish is.
A creature, human and soldier spell whilst on the stack.
A creature, human and soldier card whilst in your hand, library or graveyard.
And a permanent, creature, human and soldier whilst on the battlefield.

Cards are only spells while they exist on the "stack" which is as they are being cast. Once they resolve they either have an effect (in the case of Instants and Sorceries) or become Permanents on the battlefield.
You can think of it this way to try to help. Countermagic is similar to blocking a punch in a fist fight. You can only block a punch while it is happening. Once the punch connects(the spell resolving), there is only an effect remaining.
