Adaptive Automaton

Can I use Adaptive Automaton to put counters on any artifact creature? Like choosing Artifact Creature for the creature type? thanks
mozerdozer is right, and to add to it, the things after a dash on cards are sub-types.
So on Vampire Hexmage , it's permanent type is creature, it's subtypes are vampire and shaman. This little nugget of information is needed for cards such as the aforementioned Adaptive Automaton , and anything else that uses them. Coat of Arms is another, or Anowon, the Ruin Sage , the list goes on and on.

Here is the official rules on creature types:
302.3. Creature subtypes are always a single word and are listed after a long dash: Creature Human Soldier, Artifact Creature Golem, and so on. Creature subtypes are also called creature types. Creatures may have multiple subtypes. See rule 204.3k for the complete list of creature types. Example: Creature Goblin Wizard means the card is a creature with the subtypes Goblin and Wizard.
To answer your question, artifact is a super type. So you cannot declare artifact as your creature type for Adaptive Automaton . And the others are correct. Adaptive Automaton only gives a static +1/+1 to the declared type. It's not a counter. When he leaves the battlefield, his +1/+1 boost goes with him. You cannot proliferate it, or change it by any affect that deals with counters.

It doesn't add counters to creatures, it adds a static bonus as a continuous effect. Secondly, artifact is a type of permanent not of creatures. The creature types are what come after the dash, so the Automaton is a construct creature type. So, no you may not choose artifact as the creature type.
