"Gary Oak"

So, I've been hearing Gray Merchant of Asphodel being called "Gary Oak" recently, and I can't help but feel like this is a stupid nickname. What really is the correlation here?
Is it because "Gray" kind of looks like "Gary"?
Or perhaps it's even more stupid and people link "Asphodel" with "Ash Ketchum".
I mean, at least with Dark Confidant the guy he was made after was named Bob.
Tarmogoyf being called Goyf makes sense.
Is there something I'm missing that is supposed to make this super clever or hilarious? Please someone enlighten me as to why this nickname isn't stupid.

Yeah, his nickname is Gary, probably because of spelling similarities. I just call him Gary Oak in my Modern MBD deck because he's the best Gary I know.

How many other decks have you seen that call Gray Merchant Gary Oak?

He's Gary because of the spelling and because the card's a total dick. Losing a bunch of life while your opponent gains it just because he's entering the field makes a lot of people feel slightly salted. I love running him.

See, even to me calling Garruk Gary Oak makes more sense, I mean, he comes from the forest which is kind of funny. I just can't justify calling Gray Merchant Gary Oak. For some reason it just pisses me off. lol.. Maybe it's just one of those quirks that I hate.. I hate a lot of things after all..

I first heard him called Gary after watching an episode of Loading Ready Run's "Friday Nights" and I've called him that ever since. I even saw him referred to as that in a Wizards article a couple weeks ago.

@TheDevicer I completely agree, Gray Merchant of Asphodel is essentially Blood Artist on a stick, the similarities to last season's most dick card are uncanny. The only mvtha fvcka I call uncanny is Gary Oak.

I've never seen Gary Oak. But I call him Gary most of the time. Saying "Gray Merchant of Asphodel " everytime seems silly and Gary works instead. Its because of the spelling similarity. I love me some Gary.

I pretty much just say "Gray Merchant" or "This Fucker". Both seem to suffice.

Gary is Gray Merchant of Asphodel 's official nickname, just like Bob is Dark Confidant . I think it's because Gary is such an important card in standard and also has a pretty long name just like Bob did, and also because Gary sounds a little bit like Gray.

personally my favorite card nicknames are Desecration Demon aka "BIG D" and Soldier of the Pantheon aka "Solider Boy" all courtesy of Brian Braun-Duin

I have just heard Gary, not Gary Oak. I think Gary is just fine.
