My friend and I got into a debate about which is better, Black Lotus or Demonic Tutor .
His argument is that tutor basically reads "you may play any card in your library for two additional mana" whereas I argue that lotus can win games turn one
In a very overall sense, which do the good people of tappedout say is better?

I thnink it really depends on your deck. If your deck is built around one card and you need that one card to win the game, then Demonic Tutor fits your deck "better" (if that is possible) than Black Lotus .Although, I'd say that overall, Black Lotus is a better card.

lotus is better. with that much mana first turn, you can search for a card or cast that card. It changes turn 1 to turn 4.

Black Lotus is the best Magic card ever printed. The only card that even comes close to it is Ancestral Recall .

But why does that flower cost so much. I mean, even assumed that it's the best card ever printed, no cards cost even half as much

Scarcity, mostly. Also "legendary" value, i.e. "It's the best card ever, OMG I want it!!!!!!"

because there are not that many that actually exist. it was only printed in 3 sets. And 2 of them were limited run sets. Aside from that it has a reputation as the most powerful card. The card is infamous. In many cases when playing with one, I was just as happy to get a Sol Ring , but when you drop a lotus, the game changes. people dont want to play anymore. Its intimidation factor is great

squire1 haha it's amazing how the description you made of Black Lotus gave me chills and made me tremble. Its power really is terrifying!

In my opinion, Black Lotus
is better because that is the card which facilitates everything else by providing fast mana. You can't even cast Demonic Tutor
without some form of mana investment. That's not to say it isn't a powerful card either, because it provides inevitability and counteracts the randomness of the shuffled deck.
If you've ever tried playtesting a vintage deck (highly reccomend trying this!), you'll find that you really need the mana-artifacts to get out of the gates fast.
