Modern Season/Prices

Economics forum

So I'm looking to buy a bunch of modern staples but have been putting it off what with Christmas and various other responsibilities. I'll grab a few here and there but am wondering if I need to put a deadline on my key purchases.

So is there a modern "season" of play where the prices will start peaking. If so, when is that? I've seen chatter on the subject around the net so it got me thinking. I guess the only big change in magic economics I'm currently aware of is Standard Rotation.

To be clear, I don't attend tournament play so am not aware of when the tournaments are scheduled. I attempted to google it and got a bunch of info for 2013... which was rather useless so I just figured I'd ask the experts.

I suppose it depends what kind of deck/s you want to play. Stuff like Path to Exile, Abrupt Decay, Thoughtseize, Lightning Bolt, and what not are staples in their respective colors.

Prices fluctuate around the banlist due to speculations being made on unbanning and bannings. Prices also change in tournament season based on decks putting in good results.

The next banning announcement is Jan 19th (I think). I am unsure exactly when tournament season is. I don't play often enough.

I would say the prices fluctuate over how certain decks place and how much supply/demand there is for the cards.

The best window to purchase stuff has just past. Christmas is pretty much the dead line. The window before is flooded with A) standard rotation & B) people unloading better stuff out of desperation for Christmas money or to pay bills at this time of year. The day Christmas happens prices go up because there is more available funds across the board in our society. Nov-Dec is the best time of year to buy any eternal format staples unless they're currently in a new hyped up deck. In which case things go Goblin Guide Glittering Wish status.

Ok this is sounding promising but let me rephrase the question to be sure.

Is or will there be there a BAD time to buy magic modern staples. I really don't want to wait until late April to pick up shocks or the last half of my burn deck and then find that due to some modern tournament in Cali or France or something that all the modern prices are 1.5x their normal value.

And yeah APPLE01DOJ I noticed that trend and picked up a lot of stuff this past month.

If were talking specifically shocks. the sooner u can get them the better. If were talking 5-10$ playsets like Shard Volley or Lava Spike I would just keep an eye on the auctions on ebay (or list them in your trade binder as wants.) if you're patient u can score things really cheap and it'll give u an actual "market" value of the cards in question.

Burn cards are on a decline because the surge of new players getting into modern from KTK has slowed down.
