Kaho, Minamo Historian in EDH

Commander (EDH) forum

Hi.

If I play Kaho, Minamo Historian and remove the cards and he gets destroyed afterwards can I still use the cards removed before after casting him again?

And how many times can I play a card removed from the game with Kaho? What happens to them afterwards?

And lastly could he make a good commander and what stradegy could I follow with him?

You cannot. When he's destroyed, and brought back later on, then he's a new version of himself. He cannot play cards that are from the old version.

Are you shure? It still has the same name and the cards were still exiled by him.

(I ask because the gatherer rulings don't explain situations like this)

It has the same name, but the cards were NOT exiled by it. When a creature leaves the battlefield for any reason, then returns, it is treated as a new permanent. It has no connections to abilities that affected the old permanent. If you exile cards with Kaho, Minamo Historian , then Kaho leaves the battlefield and returns, the cards exiled by the old Kaho are not exiled by the new one. They will remain in exile with no ability connected to them.

Yes. Regardless of the same name, when a card leaves play and then returns it is considered a new version. The original exiled cards were connected to the first version. His effect triggers when he reenters to give you three new cards for his ability, but this is because he is a new version and is in no way connected to the original three.

An example of why this occurs could be seen in this:

 1. Opponent casts oblivion ring on Thragtusk
 2. In response, you cast Cloudpost .
 3. Oblivion Ring cannot target the new Thragtusk because it is a new permanent. Thus, it fizzles.
The same thing is happening here.

I was confused until I realized you meant Cloudshift instead of Cloudpost :)

Ok. Thanks.

It would have been to good to dream of. I don't think I will make a commander with him then.

If Kaho leaves the battlefield, all is not lost! You can use Tel-Jilad Stylus to return the cards to your library, and tutor them back up:

You own all cards that started the game in your deck, and all cards that you "Wished" into the game (with one of the Judgment Wish cards or Ring of Maruf).

Cancel that...it specifically says permanent, so you can't get back your instants. All is lost.

It also wouldn't work because only cards on the battlefield are permanents, when something's in another zone like the gravyard or exile, it may be a permanent card, but it's not a permanent.
