What Should I run?

Commander Deck Help forum

Alright Tappedout, I am having a bit of a dilemma here. Right now I am choosing commanders and color wedges. The first of my choices would be Sapling of Colfenor, and I would run treefolk tribal with some golgari goodstuff thrown in.

My second option would be Vorosh, the Hunter with general sultai goodstuff for the deck. I also would be running this glorious thing for the artwork proxy (I would still have the card off to the side so people wouldn't get salty that I "don't have the card").

I'm worried that I will regret one of the choices if I go with a certain one. If I go sapling, I will buy a bunch of treefolk wholesale, which should be pretty cheap. If I go with Vorosh I am going to fuse my Meren of Clan Nel Toth that I won at a standard torny and an Ezuri, Claw of Progress precon deck that I will probably just buy. Honestly I don't expect either deck to be good right off the bat (and both are cheap so no loss there), so which commander+deck will I have more fun playing in the long run?

Also has anybody seen either of these commanders played? Part of my goal was to have a really uncommon commander, and I think both of these are fairly uncommon.

I am a big fan of the saproling, I am considering eventually building him myself. Seems like oodles of fun.

Sapling is the daughter of Colefenor in the lore. She knows literally everything about the treefolk, but can't remember any of it. She also survived getting lit on fire by Ashling the Pilgrim She has a really interesting backstory.

Ph0xPhire,
¿Por que no los dos?

Seriously, though I'm not sure what your budget is, starting with one and just planning on adding the other after a while is a great plan.

I'm not sure it would help ether way, but you should totally check out The Command Zone podcast with Graham Stark from LRR. Graham doesn't play a lot of Commander, but when he does it's a with a budget Sapling of Colfenor deck. Here's the podcast on YouTube and here's Graham's decklist: CMDZ - Sapling of Colfenor - Graham Stark (LRR).

Also, cool username! Takes me all the way back to the Ice Age Foxfire ...

Draw well!

Ph0xPhire,
Just realized I mentioned the Command Zone podcast on your previous thread.

If it's been ~3 weeks and you're now thinking "maybe not the tree after all," you're probably right. So based on nothing but that, I would recommend Vorosh.

I've never player Vorosh, but for whatever it's worth, I love Rith, the Awakener (another of the Dragon Primevals). Plus, that's some seriously impressive alt-art!

As aside, you can get a good feel for how uncommon a Commander is from EDHREC. The 10 most popular Commanders have 400+ decks there. In contrast, they have only 39 Sapling of Colfenor decks and 65 Vorosh, the Hunter decks

I really appreciate the help regardless man. I'm just really iffy about the lore/aesthetic behind the actual commander. I can play most decks after a few days of getting used to them by goldfishing. My only issue is actually holding interest and enjoying playing the commander/deck itself. I've always been iffy about tribal, but treefolk /do/ seem cool to me. Knowing me I'll probably latch onto whatever I pick, but I still want to deliberate a bit, ya know?

I enjoy playing Sapling of Colfenor so I would suggest that. If the tribal aspect gets boring a b/g rock styled deck is also quite doable considering the commander is indestructible and can draw cards.

You could build Sapling of Colfenor around Assault Formation to give added bonus to you "small power"/"large toughness" creatures.

Ph0xPhire,
I totally get the Vorthos-style need to have amazing lore for a Commander. There, I frankly think the Sapling's got Vorosh beat. Daughter of Colfenor (like you mention), last of the Yew treefolk, sacrificing herself to take down Oona ... yeah she's cool!

Good thing Wyrmwood doesn't make yew deckboxes!

Ph0xPhire,
All that makes me think of other less-played BG* Commanders with amazing (IMO) lore: Glissa, the Traitor; Rhys the Exiled; Shattergang Brothers; and Anafenza, the Foremost.

Sorry for the spam if you've already looked at them and discarded!

I would definitely go with Sapling if you plan to combine Meren and Ezuri for Vorosh. I have both and they don't mix particularly well. Meren is an extremely strong general on her own, so that's definitely worth a look at. Treefolk tribal sounds awesome to me, so I'd go with that.

Saporling. Definitely. 2 color decks are way easier to build, and treefolk are so fun to play

From the sounds of it, combining two starter decks for Vorosh is a bad idea. Just from that fact I think I'll stick to sapling honestly. I think I'll just build in some flavorey cards, like Lhurgoyf.
