Nekusar or Aurelia?

Commander Deck Help forum

I can only afford to build one or the other right now. I love both of these lists, but Nekusar is definitely the one I like more. I’m a little worried though that my playgroup will not want to play against it much and would like some advice on which deck you would think I should build first. Any suggestions on either list would be helpful I’m lookin to keep both lists between $200-300.

So, this may be a little slanted because I have played and curated my Karador Combo deck (Shameless Plug) almost exclusively for three years. I have loved every second of that deck. However, I found that people did not enjoy playing against me ... until they began running graveyard hate and exile based removal.

You see a lot of the time people will hum and haw until they find a way to stop you because "it is not fair". They are right. It is not fair. It is not fair to run your deck totally freely against decks that are not prepared to deal with it. That's the whole point of a metagame. If you have a consistent playgroup then they will be able to run simple artifact/enchantment hate and/or spot removal for Nekusar and/or counter spells that will dead the so-called "unfun" wincons. Then you can tune your deck to have alternate wins/protect your wincons. Then they will find a way to deal with the protection... the cycle continues Ad Nauseam.

In short, run the thing you feel would be the most fun, but don't be a d**k about it and let the other players try to hate you out. Tell your friends that maybe running one or two Shatter effects isn't the worst idea, since there are plenty of cards like that that aren't dead every game. See Fiery Intervention.

I wish you luck! Have fun with whatever you choose, this is commander after all.

EDH has always been about playing what you want to play and since you want to play Nekusar more you should play that. Your friends will learn the deck and adapt to it or lose for the rest of their lives :P

@Epicpotato and @DrukenReaps I appreciate the support! I think you’re absolutely right, they should be able to adapt. I’ve never really had a playgroup before now and I hear people all the time complaining no one wants to play with them. I didn’t know if they actually meant that, but hopefully my playgroup learn and don’t ruin the fun for me.

id recommend nekusar. he's my favorite commander and i have a primer for cedh for him. black and blue are just too strong in edh and red white has too many flaws. plus nekusar provides a unique gamestyle where you quickly become archenemy but still can kill the table and counterspell any disruption. he is just so much more fun and stronger than aurelia. that being said go with your heart. for me it was between prossh and nekusar and both are built now but i have more fun playing nekusar cuz prossh just combos off too fast and gets boring and linear with zero opponent interaction, where nekusar plays with chaos and high risk by wheeling opponents into fresh hands!

if you want insight on tuning nekusar check out my cedh primer!

cheers

In my opinion, people shouldn't can get too salty about losing to Nekusar because the force feed archetype gives them plenty of opportunity to draw into answers. There may be sore losers if the power level/budget of your deck is way beyond theirs, but looking at your deck list, I wouldn't expect a typical LGS play group to make much of a fuss...

@MoJoMiXuP the people at my LGS are whine a lot, but it’s okay I’ll just force feed them my deck and play anyway!

Nekusar gets targeted more quickly in multiplayer games usually, even though there is some free card draw being thrown around. In my experience Aurelia can slip under the radar a bit better, and maybe surprise someone with a big attack and win the game. Nobody wants to get wheeled with Nekusar or Megrim in play and lose their hand and probably the game all of a sudden. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you don't like it) Nekusar decks telegraph their moves very clearly. Aurelia is similar in that you need an army or a bunch of pump effects for her to be really good, but playing a few random creatures while piloting Aurelia will often seem more nonthreatening than casting a Waste Not to people who understand Nekusar decks. That said Boros is much less powerful of a color combination than Grixis usually, so there is always that to consider.

Here is my personal Aurelia deck for inspiration:
