Budget Card: Merchant Scroll in lieu of Imp. Seal —Aug. 5, 2019
Merchant Scroll put in the deck as budget replacement for the slot for Imperial Seal. Previously was Muddle the Mixture , and until recently Demonic Consultation.
Primary target of Scroll is Mystical Tutor, to fetch Ad Nauseam or Eldritch Evolution.
Merchant Scroll can tutor for Dramatic Reversal to complete the Iso-Rev combo.
Merchant scroll can also find Frantic Search, to be used for discarding Razaketh when in hand. and also to act as free draw as synergy with top deck tutors and also noxious revival. Frantic search also allows us to convert colorless mana from the rocks to colored mana from the land we untap.
Scroll can also fetch brainstorm to put back razaketh into the deck if needed. Scroll can also tutor for protection like Force of Will or Pact of Negation, or Mana Drain / narset's reversal. It can also tutor for spot removal like chain of vapor , pongify , or cyclonic rift.
As last resort, Merchant scroll can tutor chain for anything, Merchant into Mystical into Demonic Tutor into whatever card you need.
Since the deck is primarily an Iso-Reversal deck, Demonic Consultation was often not useful outside of the combo win. Plus I only run Jace and no Labman. I would still be open to slotting in Demonic consultation back in the deck if needed. But so far, I am not happy to see DC in my opening hand or draw midgame, and its only been used as a combo piece. I can't use DC to tutor for my Ad Naus or Eldritch Evo without the risk of exiling the other parts of the combo.
All in all, I am liking Merchant Scroll a lot.
EDIT: Merchant scroll is great for early game, but for end game , Demonic Consultation is more powerful because its is just 1 black mana to cast. Honeslty I am torn. I like Scroll since it can fetch Ad Naus via MT, and I dont like DC early game because its dead in hand most of the time. But that cheaper cost of DC and it being black mana (which are more abudant due to the rituals) really allows us to win and assemble the combo post Ad Naus. That 1 mana you save can be huge especially when you do Main Phase Naus. Will give it more games and see what the verdict will be.
