Massive update! Thanks for 300 upvotes! —Dec. 29, 2016

Thanks you very much guyz for all your support and patience! I know I have not been that much active, and I will try to move things around!

I see we still miss a Yidris list in the description, so I will put NarejED one for now, as I know he has a good one, and if you guyz know a better one, please tell me so I can change it!!!

Lilbrudder Also would appreciate your input. I know you're mostly on BUG decks, but figured you've played against Teferi at least a few times.

Anyone is welcome to make suggestions to the above really, those three are just the only active cEDH players I remember on this forum.

I've never played with or against Teferi so I'm not going to tell you what you should do.

sonnet666: The partial pairs change hurt Daretti every bit as much as narset. Red has no good tutors except gamble so sculpting a good hand is vastly more important to him than other generals. I think the reason he hasn't dropped yet is simply that he is very cool. Every serious conversation I have heard about him has concluded hes dead from a competitive standpoint. That doesnt mean new printings cant bring some of these generals back to competitive relevance

I don't think we are micromanaging either. There has been a pretty substantial power creep lately. Gitrog, Leo, Breya, Thrasios, Yidris have all happened recently. Inevitably this is going to shake things up. Other generals that were once tier 1 and 2 are simply not good enough anymore. There are a large number of tier 3 commanders that can win a game with luck at competitive tables, but there now exists a large number of commanders in tier 2 that can't consistently hang and need to be moved down.

I agree with some generals in T2 feel pretty lackluster these days and would like to echo Lilbrudder.

Why would you go on a rant about micromanaging Tier 2. This is a tier list- there are clearly generals listed in Tier 2 that are either:

  • Yet to prove themselves
  • Are not as competitive as the others listed in 2

You know what's a lot more pointless? The ridiculous number of comments about the banlist.

Back to useful discussion, I genuinely think that Kozilek, Butcher of Truths is significantly more Tier 2 than 3. He is hands down the strongest colorless general, and most decks run a gameplan of ramping crazy hard (casting him turn 2 or 3), drawing back up and either forcing an answer or running away with the game. Loss of Paris hurt, but its just meant that a combo and stax sub-theme has become more important than running other high cost artifacts.

Quick question:

Although this is a competitive list, where should I look (i.e. Tier X) for Commanders that can hold their own in casual games but don't make people groan when you show up with a deck that has __ as a Commander. For example, people have immediately scooped when they see The Mimeoplasm as the head of my 40$ deck that can't even pull off a turn 11 win with consistency.

A better question would probably be "which Commanders can hold their own in casual games while still being fun to play/play against". You could say something like Tier 3, but there are still cards like Numot, the Devastator that would not be enjoyable.

Thanks.

That's an impossible question to answer. Some people think that a $500 Meren of Clan Nel Toth deck is perfectly fine while others think that a $75 Emmara Tandris build is too good.

@TheDevicer The question was meant to produce an open discussion and suggestions in people's objective opinions. That may be true, but I used Numot, the Devastator as my example because in casual games, land destruction is almost universally frowned upon. Frankly, it dosen't matter what hypothetical players think, because it was meant to generate a consensus. Sorry for the confusion, but I don't think giving your two cents on the issue is impossible.

@gottemn: Sounds like you want something low profile. A lot of commanders, both strong or otherwise, are considered bogeymen by the casual majority. Everything in Tier 1 is likely too scary for your group. However, there are a few commanders in tier 2 that many don't immediately recognize as being competitive. Alesha, Sisay, Grenzo, JVP, Nin, Zegana, Rashmi, Riku, Roon, Sedris, Selvala, Sidisi Brood, and Sydri are all fairly strong but don't normally have a negative reputation. They tend to fly under the radar either because they're not heavily played, or their strategies aren't too degenerate. I would look at them for potential inspiration.

As someone who usedto play in non-competitive circles, Yisan flies under the radar pretty well unless it's built like Shaper Savant's.

Similarly Omnath and Selvala both seem fairly innocuous at face value.

As someone who likes to play , I am looking into Momir Vig, Simic Visionary as a potential commander. Is he too scary? Because as it looks, he's only as good as the cards you put in to your deck, similarly to Yisan.

gottemn, Commanders that are only as good as the cards you put in the deck typically make people more nervous, since people are just going to assume you've put the best cards you can in them.

Vig is especially bad, because people know that with tutor commanders there's nothing stopping you from getting the same cards over and over again and essentially playing the same game every time.

If you like Blue/Green I'd suggest playing Rashmi, Zegana, or maybe some partner combination with Kydele. (People probably already have a bias against Thrasios.)

Hah, all you people and your REAL cards. Most of my playgroups allow proxies for cards with editions that exceed $300 :P

Arvail says... #25

My playgroup encourages full proxies with no limits. Every deck is as broken as we want them to be and people can ply whatever they want. People still drop tons on cards, but it's not ridiculous.
