Sideboard

This was a draft deck for Final Fantasy, at the last event of the season at my LGS (everyone's out of boosters!). I went 2-1, but it was a ton of fun to play and had some big swings, so I thought I'd record it here.

Kuja, Genome Sorcerer   was my P1P1, and I managed to commit decently well to a wizards strategy, though mostly in black since that color was wide open and red was pretty constrained. I made a brief attempt to pivot into green, though I ended up just splashing for Tifa Lockhart and one piece of removal. The main idea here was to pump up fliers and Tifa with equipment and push damage through, with some extra attrition from the wizards and a sizable suite of noncreature spells.

The dark horse, though, was Vincent's Limit Break. I'd previously thought of this mostly as a defensive combat trick--save your creature, maybe kill its opponent with damage--but it worked surprisingly well on offense, too. A few things I pulled off with it:

  • Cast on Tifa before combat to make her a 5/2, then play my land drop to turn her into a 10/2. And if the opponent blocks, she tramples through and still comes back.
  • Cast on Kain, Traitorous Dragoon to turn him into a 5/2. Get five treasures, draw five cards (and lose five life), and the opponent can only attack back as a 2/4.
  • Cast on Black Waltz No. 3 to make him a 7/2 with a transformed Trance Kuja, Fate Defied   out, hit for 14 damage. Oh, and the spell triggers all my wizards, too.

That last one won me my final game: 14 damage from Black Waltz, plus 2 from Kain, plus 8 damage worth of Wizard triggers meant 24 damage in one go to an opponent at 23 life.
