would I gain life

Here's what is going on. for my commander deck I just got the card Tamanoa and someone swings at me with an 8/8. Now If I use Captain's Maneuver to take the 8 damage and send it somewhere else would I gain 8 life due to Tamanoa?
ok. just wanted to make sure I didn't do something I shouldn't be able to do

To elaborate, Captain's Maneuver has a replacement effect that modifies where the 
damage would be dealt, not what is dealing it. The 8/8 (eg Terra Stomper) is still dealing the damage even though it's been redirected via the Maneuver. Tamanoa would not trigger.
If you used Deflecting Palm instead, it would work because Deflecting Palm is the source of the damage dealt.

Short answer: No.
Long answer: Captain's Maneuver does not deal the damage, the 8/8 does. Therefore, Tamanoa will not gain you life because your thing didn't do the damage.
