Would Containment Priest exile an animated land?

Asked by erabel 9 years ago

Say I control a Containment Priest and a Life and Limb . I play a Forest as my land for turn. (Can't link to the Priest, but the relevant rules text is "If a nontoken creature would enter the battlefield and it wasn't cast, exile it instead.") Would Containment Priest's replacement effect apply to the land, and exile it?

I've heard both no (because the lands are not creatures until after the replacement effect would have applied to them) and yes (because they would enter the battlefield as creatures, according to the rulings on Life and Limb). I want a few more opinions on this.

Forests that enter the battlefield while Life and Limb is on the battlefield will enter the battlefield as creatures. They'll have summoning sickness.

Because they are entering the battlefield as creatures, and you "play" lands not "cast. Containment Priest would exile them.

When the forest enters the battlefield it is a creature, but Containment Priest reads:

If a nontoken creature would enter the battlefield and it wasn't cast, exile it instead.

This check is done before it enters the battlefield and replaces it entering the battlefield. Before it is on the battlefield the forest is not a creature, it's just a basic land in your hand that is going to enter the battlefield. I don't think Containment Priest would exile it.

FancyTuesday is right, but there's a little more to it. To figure out how to apply a replacement effect that would modify how an object enters the battlefield, you look at the characteristics the object would have on the battlefield, but only take into account certain things:

  • Other replacement effects that have already modified how the object would enter the battlefield
  • Continuous effects from resolved spells or abilities that changed its characteristics on the stack (not applicable for this particular situation)
  • Continuous effects from the object's own abilities

That's it. Effects from any other sources - Life and Limb in this example - aren't taken into account. This means Containment Priest sees a land entering the battlefield and its replacement effect doesn't get applied.
