Will using Mirrorpool to copy Titania, Protector of Argoth allow me to put Mirrorpool back on the battlefield with Titania's triggered ability?

Asked by Pow3rFaLL 8 years ago

Am I correct in how this plays out?:Titania, Protector of Argoth and Mirrorpool are both on the battlefield. I pay the mana, tap and sacrifice Mirrorpool to create a token copy of Titania. When the copy hits the field Mirrorpool was already sacrificed and in my graveyard. So when the copy of Titania enters the battlefield her ETB effect triggers and I can put Mirrorpool back on the battlefield. Then of course the Titania copy is removed by the legendary rule. The purpose of this is for use in an Omnath, Locus of Rage EDH deck. So I'm counting on both The death of Titania to trigger Omnath since she's an elemental. (not sure she would since I think she is removed.) Also, counting on Titania's second ability to trigger when Mirrorpool went to the graveyard to create a 5/3 elemental. Then when the Titania copy ETB the land comes back into play triggering Omnath landfall for another 5/5 elemental.Does this sound about right? Any help appreciated. Thank you.

That is pretty much what will happen, yes, althoug not in that order.

  1. You sac Mirrorpool for its last abiity, targetting Titania. The effect is put onto the stack.
  2. Titania's second ability is put onto the stack.
  3. Assuming nothing else happens, it resolves and you get a 5/3 Elemental token.
  4. Mirrorpool's ability resolves, you get a copy of Titania.
  5. Titania's etb ability is put onto the stack, targetting Mirrorpool.
  6. Before anyone can do anything, state-based actions are checked. There are two Titanias, so the game forces you to chose one and put the rest into your graveyard (obviously, you put the token into your gy).
  7. Omnath's second ability is put onto the stack, targetting a player/creature.
  8. It resolves, Omnath deals 3 damage.
  9. Titania's etb ability resolves, Mirrorpool enters the battlefield.
  10. Omnath's first ability is put on the stack.
  11. It resolves, you get a 5/5 Elemental token.

Note that state-based actions are actually performed before abilities are put onto the stack. This is very important in cases where you have ETB and dies abilities or other abilities that you'd like to manipulate the order of.

Omnath's second ability will trigger? Does the legend rule count as a permanent dying? I thought it didn't. Seems I was mistaken.

"Dies" means "is put into a graveyard from the battlefield." Any time a creature moves from the battlefield to the graveyard, it dies. It doesn't matter what caused the move.
