What happens when a single faced card tries to ETB transformed?

Asked by pumpkinwavy 8 years ago

First off, I apologize if this question has already been asked. I did a little bit of research but could not understand any of the answers.

"701.25a Only permanents represented by double-faced cards can transform. If a spell or ability instructs a player to transform any permanent that isnt represented by a double-faced card, nothing happens."

So permanents in play without a second side cant transform. Makes sense. But what if its entering the battlefield transformed? Does it just ignore the transfrom part or does it fail to etb?

Specifically, I'm talking about a scenario where you have Necrotic Ooze in play and Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip in the graveyard along with 3 or more other cards. Activating the jace ability through Necrotic Ooze causes you to draw, discard, and then exile itself and transform, then return to play.

So Necrotic Ooze will exile, but then since it can't return to play transformed, does it stay in limbo or come back as a new copy of itself with summoning sickness? I've assumed the latter, but this article says that the Clone refrenced will stay exiled.

What happens? Is Shadows over Innistrad changing the way this works? I'm desperately hoping Necrotic Ooze comes back to play, for the sake of my pet modern deck's survival.

This is changing in the new rules with SOI, and was covered today in the following website, but short version is the Ooze will remain in exile.

A few effects can put a card onto the battlefield transformed. This means to put it on the battlefield with its back face up. Starting with this set, we have a new rule that if you're told to put a card that isn't a DFC onto the battlefield transformed, it just stays where it is. This may affect a few cards in this set, but I think the Magic Origins planeswalkers illustrate the change nicely. (This is code for "The cool cards in this set I could use to illustrate this haven't been previewed yet." I know. I feel the same way.) Say you control a Clone that's copying Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, and you activate faux-Jace's ability with four thousand cards in your graveyard. Well, four thousand is "five or more," so faux-Jace dutifully exiles himself. Then he tries to return transformed, but in exile he's just a single-faced Clone. He's not a DFC, so he gets detained at the border and remains in exile. I hope the card you drew was good, because this wasn't a great play otherwise.

Denial048 correctly described how the rules will work once Shadows over Innistrad is released. Note that until that time, the Necrotic Ooze would return to the battlefield as a normal (and un-transformed) Ooze, ready to use Jace's ability again.

Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! My Worst Fears have been confirmed, and now my combo has been destroyed!!!! Thanks for clarifying that this is a rules change, and not how it has worked all along. I was aware of the article and what it said (I linked it my question), I was simply looking here for confirmation.
