What are the interactions between Feather, the Redeemed and rebound pump spells?

Asked by Mokan 5 years ago

Do you choose which effect to follow? My thought is that you pump -> exile it -> put it in hand at the beginning of end -> rebound activates during your upkeep and nothing happens (unless you recast the spell during your untap phase with Feather still out, then it resolves, gets exiled and now you can cast it from exile for free with the rebound from last turn)

Artful Maneuver for example.

If you cast a rebound spell, both Feather and rebound create replacement effects which both put the card into exile as it resolves so both effects will still be active. The delayed triggered abilities (someone can confirm or correct me on whether Feather's is a delayed triggered ability) each have a different time when they trigger so whichever comes first will happen first.

If you cast Artful Maneuver before any end step, it will go to exile then return to your hand at the beginning of the next end step. It will no longer be in exile to be available for the rebound trigger on your upkeep.

If you cast Artful Maneuver during the end step before your turn, it will go to exile then you may cast it for free from exile at the beginning of your upkeep. If you do cast it at that time it will be exiled by Feather and returned to your hand at the beginning of your end step. If you choose not to cast it at that time it remains exiled and Feather will return it to your hand at the beginning of your end step.

Also, players don't receive priority during the untap step and anything that triggers during it wait until the upkeep to be put on the stack.

If you cast an instant or sorcery with Rebound (let's say Center Soul ) while Feather, the Redeemed both Feather's trigger and Rebound will create a replacement effect for when the spell would go to your graveyard.

Because two or more replacement effects are trying to affect your spell, you would get to choose which one applies, and the other will have no effect. Whichever one you choose will create a delayed triggered ability.

If you choose Feather, the Redeemed , the delayed triggered ability will trigger at the beginning of the next end step, and return the card to your hand.

If you choose Rebound, however, the delayed triggered ability will trigger at the beginning of your next upkeep and allow you to cast the spell from exile without paying its mana cost.

It's important to note that no player receives priority during the untap step, so you can't cast any spells during the untap step. The first point at which any player receives priority is the upkeep step, after all "beginning of upkeep" triggers have been put on the stack.

RicketyEng, the replacement effect is what creates the delayed triggered ability (yes, Feather creates a delayed trigger), so whichever replacement effect is not used won't create its trigger.

603.7a Delayed triggered abilities are created during the resolution of spells or abilities, as the result of a replacement effect being applied, or as a result of a static ability that allows a player to take an action. A delayed triggered ability won't trigger until it has actually been created, even if its trigger event occurred just beforehand. Other events that happen earlier may make the trigger event impossible.

I should point out that what happens to the spell isn't determined by when you cast it, but by which replacement effect you choose to apply. It's not a timing issue.
