What about annihilator and Storm Cauldron???

Asked by thegigibeast 8 years ago

My opponent has 3 lands and two permanents on the field. I have Storm Cauldron in play and I swing at him with Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. Can he declare the lands has his targets for annihilator, then tap them to bounce them to his hands???

So, will he get back the lands in his hands or will they be destroyed to annihilator???

Annihilator does not target. When you swing Kozilek he can tap his lands for mana to bounce them to his hand. He still has to sacrifice 4 permanents though so he will have to sacrifice both of the others still on the field.

As Gidgetimer said, Annihilator does not target. If a spell or ability which targets has its target become an illegal target (this might happen if the targeted card leaves the battlefield or becomes hexproof or gains shroud) that spell or ability is countered. (For a spell with multiple targets, if only one becomes illegal, the rest of the spell still resolves).

However, annihilator is not a targeted ability. Your opponent in the above situation could, of course, bounce his lands in response to the ability, but that wouldn't have any affect on the annihilator. When the annihilator ability resolves, you opponent must choose four permenants and sacrifice them. Nothing can interfere with the resolution of the ability, and the choosing and sacrificing happens all at once, with no chance for a response. Static abilities (such as the one on Sigarda, Host of Herons will still apply, and appropriate triggered abilities such as Blood Artist's triggered ability will still trigger, but once the annihilator has started resolving, you opponent can't interfere with it.

I hope that helps!
