Sram's Expertise?

Asked by Thuking 6 years ago

sorry for so many questions basically Sram's Expertise

say on turn 4 I cast this at the start of my turn and I have instants in my hand but I don't know if I want to cast that or just summon a less than 3 mana cost creature can I go to combat and then use the free spell cast to use on an instant spell or do I need to use the free cast before combat?

You need to declare what you want to cast before the spell resolves.

The free spell is part of the original spell so the Expertise will need to fully resolve before you can do anything, if you don't cast anything for free from the Expertise, you will then lose the part of the spell that makes that spell playable.

So, specifically, the part of Sram's Expertise that reads "You may cast a card with converted mana cost 3 or less from your hand without paying its mana cost." happens during the resolution of Sram's Expertise. It does not allow you to cast a cmc<=3 spell later in the turn, it allows you to cast one now, as part of the spell resolving.

So under normal circumstances, you would have to cast Expertise during your Main Phase, and cast whatever you're going to play for free as part of that resolution, during your main phase. If however, you find a way to grant Sram's Expertise Flash, with say, Vedalken Orrery, Leyline of Anticipation, or Quicken, then you would simply be able to cast Sram's Expertise during the combat step, which would enable you to cast your free spell during the combat step, as part of resolving Expertise.
