some question regarding priority

Asked by syilphion 9 years ago

here is the scenario,

if someone say "end the turn" or "pass the turn" skipping his 2nd main phase, a i say, "at the end of your turn i will cast"

question 1 : when do i cast exactly? at 2nd main phase? or there is priority exchange after main phase 2 and before cleanup step?

question 2 : say i legally cast Illusory Angel , because he already said pass the turn, can he still Murderous Cut it after illusory resolve?

i know in casual, almost everything as long as both player agree it doesn't matter, but what about in fnm or higher level tournament? do after he said pass the turn, if you cast anything, the state back to before he said anything, and both player pass priority again till the game decide it is end of the turn?

sorry for bad english and lengthy explanation

All of the phases of the turn happen, even if nobody does anything in them.

1/ If somebody, after combat just says "I end my turn" what is actually happening is they are presenting an empty stack to you in the second main phase, which if you pass priority, will move them into their end step and end the turn. If you have something to cast, you can cast it in their second main phase if you want, or in their end step. They'll still be able to respond to what you cast, or even let your spell resolve and then still cast something else, since you only ever actually change steps and phases when both people do nothing in sequence over an empty stack.

2/ If it is their turn, you won't be able to cast Illusory Angel on their turn anyway unless you have some way to cast creature spells as though they had flash. If it is your turn, You can only cast creatures during your first or second main phase unless something allows you to cast creature spells as though they had flash.

Regardless, if you -do- cast a creature like that, they will once again have priority after it resolves to do something like cast Murderous Cut

Phases only progress once both players have passed priority over an empty stack. If one person passes priority, and the other person puts something on the stack, you go through the process of emptying the stack, and then the active player gets priority again, and would have to pass -again- and have the other player pass as well before you moved on to the next phase.

The phrase "pass the turn" is a shortcut proposing that you both pass priority until the end of their turn.

If you would like to cast something and you say "at the end of your turn" it is usually assumed that you are doing on their end step since it doesn't matter to you and staying in the main phase helps them.

If you refuse the short cut or only partially let it happen then your opponent has the opportunity to cast spells in response or even after yours resolves and before the turn ends.

Duels has some problems and will sometimes do stuff weirdly. But unless you are somehow giving it flash you would be unable to cast it on an opponents turn.

Nice answer DevoninBut im not sure about something you said: "Regardless, if you -do- cast a creature like that, they will once again have priority after it resolves to do something like cast Murderous Cut"

They get priority when I cast sth else or I decide to go to the next fase right? (so if its a PW that resolves u can use an ability before they can cast Murderous Cut )

Planeswalker abilities can only be activated at sorcery speed, so you wouldn't be able to use them outside of the main phase on your turn. If you had Teferi, Temporal Archmage 's emblem you could activate it in response to a spell though.

It is important to remember that any time a spell or ability resolves the active player receives priority first.

@nit1508

What I mean is that no phase ends until both players pass priority over an empty stack.

Whenever both players pass priority in succession, the topmost object on the stack resolves. After it has resolved, the active player has priority.

So if it were their turn, and they said "I end my turn" and you said "at the end of your turn, I flash in Illusory Angel " (Pretending you had some means to cast creature spells as instants, like Prophet of Kruphix ) when the angel resolved, the turn wouldn't just end. Instead you'd still be in the End Step, with the active player having priority.

They'd have time to cast something like Murderous Cut since it's still their turn and they have priority.

If you had a way to flash in a Planeswalker on somebody else's turn, they would be able to play an instant before you could activate a loyalty ability, since they would have priority when it resolved, and not you. It's when you cast it on your own turn that you are the one who has priority afterwards, so you can activate an ability before they can cast a spell.
