Slaughter Pact, Hivemind, and one creature.

Asked by Pheardemons 8 years ago

If I have Hive Mind on the battlefield and I cast Slaughter Pact with only one creature on the battlefield, let's say it's a Primeval Titan, My opponent's Slaughter Pact will resolve first due to Hive Mind's trigger and kill the only creature on the battlefield; Primeval Titan. Due to the fact there are no more creatures to even target will I still have to pay the upkeep cost for the Slaughter Pact that I played?

Slaughter Pact only sets up its delayed triggered ability if it resolves. Remember that if all of a spell or ability's targets become illegal before it resolves, then the spell or ability is countered by the game rules (this is called "fizzling").

Because your opponent's Slaughter Pact resolves first, the target of your Slaughter Pact will be illegal and your Slaughter Pact will fizzle, meaning it never creates the DTA that would cause you to lose the game.

Delayed triggered ability.

Slaughter Pact's second effect is to create a DTA that triggers at the beginning of your next upkeep. That ability is what gives you the option to pay or lose when it resolves, and it triggers and uses the stack just like any other triggered ability.
