Question with Walking Ballista that came up at the Prerelease

Asked by Grrvvpp23 7 years ago

Hey there,

So yesterday at the 2HG prerelease a doubt came up that we couldnt clear properly since there was no judge with us. I had in play a Walking Ballista and a Scrap Trawler in play. What happens when ballista dies? Does Trawlers ability allow to bring it back to your hand? Since we didnt know how Trawlers lesser converted mana cost worked in this case is zero the minimum possibility? Or does it whiff and you simply cant return anything to your hand?

From Scrap Trawler's Gatherer page:

2/9/2017 While on the battlefield or in a graveyard, in an object’s mana cost is 0.

So, there is nothing in your yard that costs less than zero. You cannot select a legal target and the ability is not even put on the stack.

On the flip side, any other artifact that dies and has a CMC of at least 1, will be return the Walking Ballista.

Note that its ability does trigger and goes on the stack, but it is removed from the stack due to lack of legal target.
