Question about Odric, Lunarch Marshal

Asked by Timmy_Appleseed 7 years ago

I was recently playing a game with my bro and we were nearing the end of the game, he summoned Odric, Lunarch Marshal and when I attacked him with what should have won me the game, he pointed out that Odric gave his army all these powers. I told him that was only on his combat faze and not while defending my attack. We continued the game assuming he was right and I lost badly thanks to his convenient Odric card. Can I get some clarification plz?

Your bro is actually correct, as Odric, Lunarch Marshal reads "at each combat" as opposed to "combat on your turn". His ability triggers if he is defending or attacking, not just one or the other. Do note that with Odric another creature has to have the powers/abilities to let Odric to give them to his other creatures.

Then why does it say "until the end of turn"? It makes it seem like it is talking about the person who is controlling the cards turn. That would mean it is only activated during the combat faze of that person. That's just how it seems to me so plz explain that.

Timmy_Appleseed, the steps go like this:

Upkeep-Draw-1st Main Phase-Begin Combat-Attacks-Blocks-Combat Damage-2nd Main Phase- End Step-Cleanup Step

Odric's ability triggers on both players' combat step, not only when it is the turn of the controller of Odric. It says until end of turn so that it won't get double flying or double lifelink, etc. which would make the card unnecessarily complicated for no reason.

First, Odric's ability is triggered. It isn't activated.

"Until end of turn" only defines a duration. The effect lasts until the cleanup step of the current turn. This phrase has absolutely no implications related to when the effect can begin; only when it can end. And it doesn't care at all whether the current turn is yours or your opponent's.

Remember, cards do only what they say they do. Don't read meanings that aren't there.

The duration defining clause has multiple implications.

  1. First main phase Wrath of God can destroy all of the creatures without native indestructible (assuming that indestructible was one of the shared abilities).

  2. First main phase all creatures without native hexproof can be targeted by the opponent (assuming that hexproof was one of the shared abilities).

  3. If a creature dies after the abilities are granted their, native abilities that no other creatures have natively will not be granted the next turn.

  4. If Odric dies no abilities will be shared the next turn.
