New storm player here

Asked by unbendingsea 9 years ago

So I am pretty well in doubt with combo decks, but I never built a storm deck before until here recently and I was interested in how Pyromancer Ascension works with the rituals. If there are two counters on ascension and I play one of the rituals afterwards when the second counter adds, do I get to copy the ritual to add six mana instead of three?

Pyretic Ritual, for the sake of example.

Yes. Pyromancer Ascension's second triggered ability will trigger for any instant or sorcery spell you cast if Pyromancer Ascension already had two or more quest counters on it when the casting process began.

If this instant or sorcery spell is Pyretic Ritual, you'll get a copy that resolves and adds to your mana pool. Then, the original will resolve and add another to your mana pool.

Granted Pyromancer Ascension is active, and you cast an instant or sorcery spell that has the same name as a card in your yard, you will get a copy. The two spells goes on the stack in the order: the spell you cast is put on the stack, Ascensions ability triggers, the ability resolves, the copy is put on the stack, the copy resolves "three mana is added", then the original spell resolves, "giving you another three mana" adding up to a total of five.

Epochalyptik's answer is correct, but your last sentence is worded oddly. Note that if you cast a spell and that adds the 2nd counter, then that spell won't get copied. However, if Pyromancer Ascension already has two counters, then if you cast Pyretic Ritual the you will get instead of .

Of note, if you cast a Desperate Ritual splicing another Desperate Ritual with an active ascension, you will get 12 because Splice adds the text of the other spell onto the spell you cast.
